Science help! what quantity is the dependent variable? The independent variable?

I'm doing a science lab and we had to dertermine how string length is related to the period of a pendulum...i know the variables are cycles completed in 30 seconds and string length but how do you find the quantity? i have a data table and stuff so would you just add up the colums of number's!!?!??!?! please help, mega confused.
